Sport and Physical Literacy Programs

Under the guidance and leadership of the UBC School of Kinesiology, we provide developmentally appropriate sport and physical literacy based classes to participants of all ages and levels of ability across a wide range of communities.

Our program philosophy emphasizes positive sport experiences, physical literacy development,  and encourages life-long participation in physical activity.

All programs are led by Active Kids trained and UBC Kinesiology student instructors and volunteers.

Soccer 3-5 YRS
Mondays, 4pm – 4:45pm

A program created specifically for UNA members (but open to the public) and under the direction of Active Kids and the UBC School of Kinesiology, this recreational indoor soccer program focuses on principles of the Active Start stage of the Long Term Athlete Development model. Instructors trained by Active Kids will help children to develop agility, balance, and coordination as well as build fundamental movement skills and soccer specific skills through fun and developmentally appropriate soccer activities and games. No experience necessary.

Group size: Six children to each coach

Soccer 6-9 YRS
Mondays, 5pm – 5:45pm

A program created for UNA members (but open to the public) and under the direction of the Active Kids and the UBC School of Kinesiology, this recreational indoor soccer program focuses on principles of the FUNdamentals and Learn to Train stages of the Long Term Athlete Development model. Instructors trained by Active Kids will help children to develop fundamental movement skills and soccer specific skills through fun and developmentally appropriate soccer activities, skill builders, and games. No experience necessary.

Group size: Eight children to each coach

Basketball (8-12 YRS)
Tuesdays, 4pm – 5:30pm; Thursdays, 4pm – 5:30pm; Saturdays 12pm – 1:30pm

A program created for UNA members (but open to the public) and under the direction of the Active Kids and the UBC School of Kinesiology, this recreational basketball program focuses on physical literacy development as well as basketball specific skill development and game play. Through a variety of fun games and drills, Active Kids trained Instructors will help reinforce fundamental movement skills and develop skill sets in areas such as dribbling, passing, shooting rebounding, as well as team play and strategy. All skill and experience levels are welcome.

Group size: Eight children to each coach

Through a variety of fun games and drills, Active Kids trained Instructors will help reinforce fundamental movement skills and develop skill sets in areas such as dribbling, passing, shooting rebounding, as well as team play and strategy. Homeschool Multi-Sport (4-13 YRS)


Mondays, 12:30pm - 2:00pm

Designed specifically for the home learners community! This program offers a variety of exciting games and skill builders across various sports with an emphasis on fun and physical literacy development. Registration and participation take place at the Osborne Centre.

Multi-Sport & Playtime (1.5-3 YRS)
Mondays, 9:30am – 10:15am

A program created for UNA members (but also open to the public) and under the direction of the UBC Active Kids and the School of Kinesiology, this fun, interactive, and high energy class will introduce your child to agility, balance, coordination and basic fundamental movement skills including running, jumping, kicking, throwing, and catching through a variety of sports and games with an emphasis on developing physical literacy. Kinesiology student Instructors and volunteers trained by Active Kids will guide children in a fun warm up, developmentally appropriate sport games and skill builders, and end each class with free play. A parent or guardian is required to participate (only one parent/guardian can be accommodated).

Please note: all participants require a waiver signed by their legal parent or guardian.

Mini-Sports and Physical Literacy (3-5 YRS)
Mondays, 10:15am – 11am

A program created for UNA members (but also open to the public) and under the direction of the UBC Active Kids and the School of Kinesiology, this fun, interactive, and high energy class will create a safe space for your child to independently practice fundamental movement skills (such as running, jumping, kicking, throwing) as well as practice sport specific skills and games (such as basketball, soccer, hockey, tennis, volleyball) through fun games. Kinesiology student Instructors and volunteers will guide children through all activities with a focus on physical literacy development including motivation and confidence building. This is a great class to move into after Multi-Sport and Playtime, or for your first experience to sport and physical activity, all are welcome!

Kids Fit (7-12 YRS)

Mondays and Wednesdays, 4pm-6pm

The UTown@UBC Kids Fit Program is only offered during the Spring term. It is a 6-week fun and interactive after-school program for kids aged 7-12 years old who live in UTown@UBC to engage in physical activity in a fun and social setting! The program offers kids meaningful, inclusive and age appropriate physical activities on campus. One of our most popular programs, Kids Fit is an initiative offered jointly by UBC Campus + Community Planning, Student Housing and Hospitality Services (SHHS), the University Neighbourhoods Association (UNA) and the UBC School of Kinesiology

Please note: all participants require a waiver signed by their legal parent or guardian.

Group size: 50 spots are offered, approx. 1 coach for every 6-8 kids

Location: Pick-up / drop-off is at Acadian Park, activity locations vary each day
